Who They Are:
Highly motivated and competitve High-School students who are competitively selected from the low-economic area surrounding Lincoln High School. Each student is in dire need of a fresh perspective of the world and what opportunities and lives are possible outside of their current homes and neighborhoods. By proving their dedication to our program for a semester they are chosen to join us on the most rewarding and fulfilling education they have ever experienced. The World Classroom gives them the opportunity to surpass their current self and develop into a more successful leader and citizen. This organization is equal opportunity educators and sponsor both girls AND boys (although no boys are photographed in this particular picture).

"I became involved in the World Classroom spring/summer 2007 on the Italy project. This organization gave me the opportunity to see the world at a very young age, something several of my peers may never have the chance to do. Sightseeing in London and taking a boat into the beautiful city of Venice are experiences of a lifetime. Our project focused on particle physics, but I came back to the United States with a host of new Italian friends, and stronger friendships with the girls from my school. Whether we lost luggage or spent the night at Gatwick airport, these events truly made our trip memorable. In the future, I would definitely donate to the World Classroom so that other students will be able to gain a broader knowledge of cultures that you can only experience through travel. I am currently awaiting high school graduation, and soon after that I will be counting down the days until I leave for the University of Texas at Austin. Because of the World Classroom, I hope to be able to study abroad and serve as a mentor to future World Classroom participants." - Ashley Green-Jones

"I am one of the eight students who were selected to travel with The World Classroom to Beijing, China. This trip truly taught me lessons that I could have never learned had I not have had this experience. Not only have I viewed the world differently since this trip, but I also look at our society differently, especially our education system since that is what the main goal of our trip focused on. We spent time in the classroom interacting with the Chinese students, which truly taught me so much about their culture, and about my own. We also toured Beijing and Harbin. We witnessed rich history that was on its way to becoming only a faded memory as we toured the Forbidden City as it was facing demolition. We toured the Summer Palace and learned about Ancient Dynasties and their Emperors. We experienced culture at the Opera, known as the teahouse, which turned out to be quite amusing despite my initial apprehensions. I can also say that not only did I witness these marvels, but I also had the privilege to walk on one of the seven wonders of the world: The Great Wall Of China. I am currently a sophomore at the University of North Texas majoring in psychology. I hope to become a child psychologist so that I can give back to my community by giving our youth a chance through counseling and mentoring. This is what Mrs. Pickton and Mr. Carollo have done for all of us through this program. Not only have they opened the door to the experience of world travel for us, they have also opened our minds and our eyes. This program is one of the most positive aspects of my high school career that has helped to shape me into the young woman I am today. I hope that this program will continue and other teens will have a chance to experience the blessings that it has brought to me."
What They Gain:
Cultural Understanding- By our students being there, in the flesh, and seeing for themselves the sights, sounds and differences in ways of life they come to understand what another culture is truly like. Books, TV's and videos can never replace the real thing. The World Classroom values experience, first hand.
Leadership Opportunities- All of our students are looking for a chance to get ahead and society and through the World Classroom they gain the ability to think outside the box, the patience to work within a team and the confidence to believe in their own growth.
